When leaving an unfamiliar port, set your coarse, make sure you are heading straight for the next marker.
Then ......Look out the back door and line up an obvious land mark (preferably not a cloud )
Do this for every line of passage (mark to mark)
Then if you have a power failure, you will know the way home by eyesight marks.
Just get to the mark (one at a time) and look for your eyesight marker or bearing for the next mark.
In thick fog? Or heavy rain - It is pull out of the main shipping lane and rest (wait out the fog) or use Radar on a reduced scale (3-5 miles)
